Cynthia introduces you to Nic Hartmann today. Nic has written a book on concepts such as hygge, koselig, and sisu. Wonder what these words mean? And how about how to pronounce them? Learn along with Cynthia as Nic also connects these nordic practices to the Orthodox Christian faith and its traditions. Come along for a cozy chat!
Nic Hartmann is a folklorist,
writer, and nonprofit leader based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. By day,
he is the director of Family Promise of Linn County, a nonprofit
that helps families facing housing crises find stability. By night,
he is a knitter, comic artist and writer whose first
book, Northern
Lights of Christ, was
released in October 2021 through Park End
Books.
During and after his graduate studies in
folklore, Nic spent many years working as a public folklorist,
doing cultural work as an oral historian, educator and content
developer. He felt a deeper need to serve people who were
struggling, eventually transitioning to social services work during
the pandemic. He is interested in the ways that people can use
creative strengths to fulfill basic human needs, and how everyday
culture and tradition can shape our practices of loving our
neighbor. At the same time, Nic has had a lifelong personal
interest in the culture and traditions of the Nordic world, which
led him to study abroad in Estonia, and ultimately served as a
jumping off point for his journey to becoming an Orthodox
Christian.
Nic and his wife, Jen, have two daughters, and are members of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in Cedar Rapids. He serves as a Sunday school teacher for St. George, as well as a member of the choir, and is part of the content team for Orthodox Journeys, a pan-Orthodox educational initiative based in Minneapolis.
